Our Assistant Scoutmaster (ASM), Gregory Chapelle, has lived in Rancho Penasquitos for many years with his wife Sonja and their two sons Eric and Lucas.  Dr. Chapelle was a Boy Scout himself as a youth, achieving the Life Scout Rank, and he became actively involved in Troop 667 when Eric joined the Troop upon completing Cub Scouts.  He served for two years as an Assistant Scoutmaster of the Troop, and then was Scoutmaster from June 2009 to December 2013 and has been an assistant Scoutmaster since then.  He has taken Leader Basic training as well as High Adventure Leader, Water Trek Leader, and Backpacking training.  His First Aid training includes CPR, First Aid Certification, and Wilderness First Aid Courses.

Scoutmaster Leader Award of Merit

Dr. Chapelle has been honored to receive seven major Scouting awards for his work with Cub Scout Pack 629 and Boy Scout Troop 667.   In 2012 he was awarded the Scoutmaster's Key for supporting troop youth leadership and outdoor activities, and in 2011 he was awarded the Unit Leader Award of Merit for his efforts to encourage youth rank advancement and for promoting a positive image of Scouting in the community.  The Unit Leader Award of Merit allowed him to wear the special Scoutmaster's Leader Patch with a star above the BSA Emblem while he was a Scoutmaster.  In 2010 Dr. Chapelle was awarded the Boy Scout Leader's Training Award for troop organization, promoting and supporting Scout outings, and engaging in supplemental leader training.  In 2008 he was admitted as a James E. West Fellow,, named after the first chief Scout executive who served the Boy Scouts of America for 30 years.  In 2007 Dr. Chapelle received the Webelos Den Leader Award and in 2006 was awarded the Cub Scouter Award for leading a Cub Scout Pack in earning the Quality Unit Award.  In 2005 he earned the Den Leader's Award for promoting service projects and leading a strong Cub Scout Den program.

In 2015 Dr. Chapelle received the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) "Outstanding Contribution to the Community" from the San Diego Section of AIAA for his 12 years as a Scouting volunteer.

In Dr. Chapelle's Scout Leader career, he has held numerous Scouting positions including Den Leader, Webelos Den Leader, Cub Scout Committee Chairman, Boy Scout Assistant Scoutmaster, and  Boy Scout Roundtable Staff Member for the Black Mountain District of San Diego Imperial Council.

Dr. Chapelle is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow (OA).

Dr. Chapelle is currently a merit badge counselor for Cycling (Eagle Required), Camping (Eagle Required), Hiking (Eagle Required), Backpacking, Canoeing, Engineering, Electronics, Radio Merit Badges, Bird Study, Woodworking.  His interests also include hiking, birding, ham radio (WA6YLR), mountain biking, bicycle touring, astronomy, music and photography.
